Iron River Historic Guided Tour
The Nervion River is the origin of Bilbao and it is also the main axis to understanding the development of Bizkaia and the Basque Country related with the rich iron mines and the close business relationship with England at the end of the XIX century .
Starting in Bilbao and using the public transport to get to the coast, we will guide you through the history of the Basque Country.
Our first stop will be at Aizkorri beach, a unique beach and probably our favorite one close to Bilbao city. This beach with black sand, is covered by a green blanket of dunes and flanked by a steep cliff, it is the perfect spot for nature lovers, and is considered a geological and biological jewel. Its wild appearance is characteristic, with stunning green and fossilized dunes that nature lovers will adore. It’s also an excellent place for Nordic walking, as the dunes are hard and nicely compact.
The path that runs along spectacular landscapes and steep cliffs, arrives to the mouth of the River, where we will enjoy a local snack with pintxos and drinks at Algorta Old Fishing Port, a charismatic place to enjoy the gastronomy traditions .
After a beautiful path along the mounth of the river, through the beaches and stroll past the Great Villas Promenade, we will arrive to Bizkaia Bridge.
Bizkaia Bridge, more popularly known as the Hanging Bridge, is the most representative of the industrial era and one of Euskadi’s most renowned icons. Its main function is to connect the two banks of the Nervion Estuary between Portugalete and Getxo.
Declared a World Heritage site on 13th July 2006, it is the oldest shuttle bridge in world and bears direct witness to Bizkaia’s most recent history. For the UNESCO it is “an exceptional expression of creativity, perfectly blending its functionality and aesthetic beauty”.
This historic tour along the Iron River, will help you to understand the past and the present of Bizkaia; the most important province of the Basque Country full of heritage and traditions.
